Affiliate commissions are not paid instantly: the sale is recorded right away, but the money arrives weeks later, once the store confirms it. Along the way come statuses such as pending, confirmed and rejected that confuse almost everyone in the first month, and then other questions: why less arrived than expected, what to keep and whether you need to declare it.
This guide walks through the full life of a commission, from click to payment, and explains what a campaign page rarely tells you: timing, deductions along the way and the tax side. If you are not yet clear on who pays whom in this model, read what affiliate marketing is first; here we assume you already have your own link or code.
What happens between the click and the money in your account?
A commission goes through several stages, and each one depends on someone different. The click on your link leaves a marker showing the visit came from you. If that person buys within the attribution window, the period the campaign sets for counting the sale as yours, the sale is recorded as pending. Up to that point everything is automatic and takes minutes.
Confirmation, on the other hand, depends on the store. It waits for the return period to end, checks that the order was paid and delivered, and only then validates the commission. What is confirmed is what gets paid. In practice that means weeks, not days, and the first payment can arrive well after the first sale.
Why do affiliate commissions stay pending or get rejected?
Pending means the sale exists but the store has not validated it yet. Rejected means validation failed, almost always for one of these reasons: the customer returned the product or cancelled the order, the payment did not go through, the purchase did not meet the campaign terms, such as excluded products or a coupon from another source, or there were signs of fraud, such as automated clicks or self-purchases.
Another frequent and avoidable cause is the country. Many campaigns only pay for orders shipped to certain countries; if your audience buys from elsewhere, the sale is rejected even though the link works. That is why it pays to recommend only campaigns available where your audience lives. Some rejections are normal on any account; what to watch is a sudden jump.
Why does less arrive than the dashboard showed?
When a campaign pays in another currency, between the dashboard amount and what reaches your account there can be a currency conversion, a transfer fee and, in some countries, a deduction by your own bank when receiving money from abroad. None of these is a calculation error: they are costs along the way.
To avoid surprises, always compare the confirmed amount with what actually arrived and note the difference. If you work with several platforms at once, each will have its own calendar, currency and costs, and having everything in one place makes the accounting much simpler.
Which records are worth keeping?
Treat your affiliate commissions like business income. Keep a summary per campaign and per month with recorded, confirmed and rejected sales and the net amount; the receipt of each payment with the date, currency and exchange rate applied; and the campaign terms in force when you posted. Export it every month, not when you need it.
Those records serve three purposes: claiming a missing commission, knowing which campaigns really pay rather than which promise more, and showing your income to whoever asks, whether an accountant or the tax office. They also put the numbers in perspective: what decides how much you earn is not the size of your account, as we explain in how many followers you need, but how many sales get confirmed.
What about taxes?
Commissions are income and, as such, must be declared. How, how much and to whom depends on the country you live in: in some you have to register as self-employed and issue an invoice for each payment; in others it is enough to declare it with the rest of your income; and when payment comes from abroad there may be specific withholdings. You will not find rates or formulas here, because they change and because your case is yours.
What is common: before the first payment you may be asked for your tax ID or residency details, and nothing is paid until you provide them. Do it as early as possible. And talk to a local accountant from the first month with income, not when a notice arrives: it is always cheaper than fixing things later.
What should I do if a commission is missing?
Before claiming, check three things. The attribution window: if the person bought after the campaign period, the sale is not yours. The journey: if they opened the link on one device and bought on another, or used a coupon from another source, the attribution may have been lost. And the link: make sure you posted your own and not a version copied from the store without your identifier.
If everything checks out, contact support with the date, the approximate amount and a screenshot of the confirmation if you have one. Many cases get resolved; some do not, and that is part of the model. What you must never do is ask your audience to repeat the purchase or invent test orders: that ends in a closed account.
How payment works with ADQ Links, ADEQ's affiliate product
With ADQ Links, ADEQ's affiliate product, there is no separate platform and no different calendar to keep track of. Confirmed commissions appear in your ADEQ report and are paid by ADEQ together with the rest of your earnings, whether they come from the formats on your site or from your creator links and codes. As for the split, you keep the larger share of every commission.
Everything above still applies: only what the brand confirms is paid, and a sale can take longer than a display impression to move from pending to confirmed. If you recommend with codes, discount codes for influencers explains how to make the most of them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I earn commissions without having a company?
In most countries yes, as an individual, but the income must still be declared and in some cases you have to register as self-employed above a certain level. Check with an accountant in your country.
Where can I see how much I have generated?
In the dashboard of the platform you work with, keeping recorded and confirmed amounts apart. With ADQ Links you see it in your ADEQ report, next to the rest of your earnings, with no other account to check.
Why does confirmation take so long?
Because the store waits for the return period to end and for the order to be paid and delivered. Until then the sale can still be cancelled, which is why it stays pending.
